The Types of Well Pumps We Service
Our plumbers service all types of well pumps, including:
- Submersible pumps. This pump is fully submersed under water inside the well. Because of this, they usually come in long metal cylinders. These pumps are more common for deeper wells.
- Jet pumps. This type of pump is non-submersible and is instead connected to the well through a suction pipe. This pump comes in two models:
- Single-drop. This is installed inside the home or building and is more common for shallow wells.
- Double-drop. The jet is installed inside the well and the motor is installed outside of it. This type is usually for deeper wells.
- Centrifugal pumps. This pump is installed outside of the well but uses an internal fan to draw water out and into the home. These are often the smallest type of pump and they sit in a mechanical housing unit next to the well.

Well Pump FAQs
Can you tell me how to test a well pump?
To test a well pump, follow these steps:
- Check that the power is on. If it’s off, turn it back on and wait to see if the pump is shutting off on its own.
- Check the pump, storage tank, and control panel for loose bolts or connections. Tighten any loose ones and turn your pump off and back on to see if that resolves the issue.
- Check the control panel. Are there any visible signs of defects and wear? If so, call for professional repair.
- Test the air valve on the water pressure tank. Find the air valve near the top of the tank. Release a small amount of air from the valve and check if any water came out. If so, the tank is waterlogged and needs repair. If not, further professional tests will be needed.
If your well pump still isn’t working, call your local Benjamin Franklin Plumbing for well pump services. Our experts will further test your pump to determine the issue and a plan for repair.
Can you tell me how to adjust a well pump pressure switch?
To improve how water is delivered to different areas of your home, you may need to adjust your well pump pressure switch. To do so:
- Switch off the breaker to the pump.
- Remove the cover on the pressure switch.
- Look inside the cover for the pre-set PSI settings.
- Based on the settings, use a wrench to turn the larger center nut to raise or lower the PSI. One full turn clockwise should adjust the PSI by 2-3. Counterclockwise turns will lower the PSI.
- If needed, turn the right nut to adjust the highest pressure in the PSI settings.
- Turn the pump back on and check the cut-in pressure. If necessary, make additional PSI adjustments.
- Turn the pump back off and check the cut-out pressure. If necessary, make additional PSI adjustments.
If you’re having any difficulty making these adjustments, call our local experts!
Can you tell me how to fix a short-cycling well pump?
A short-cycling well pump could be caused by many issues, including a faulty water pressure control switch, sediment buildup, too much or too little air in the reservoir tank, and clogged water lines.
To properly identify the issue and avoid further damaging your well pump, it’s best to contact a service expert.
